There are other rarer power-ups, including a Boomerang Bros. To be honest it’s probably a bit too easy to get hold of in the game, and makes many areas easier than they need be, but it’s still a joy to use nevertheless. ![]() The latter was created before Yoshi even existed and allows you to hover in mid-air in a similar manner. ![]() 3 – never seen again in action till this game. The two primary power-ups are the classic Fire Flower suit that lets you shoot fireballs and the Racoon Suit from Super Mario Bros. The effect when you collect an extra power-up and it whizzes down onto the touchscreen, as well as the Piranha Plants that spit ink at the screen, caught us every time and are amongst the best tricks we’ve seen the 3DS pull off. For much of the time the game is happy to make fairly subtle use of the effect, which makes the times it purposefully shoots something out at you all the more effective. The use of 3D is also excellent, with two settings that push the image either more into or out of the screen, depending on your preference. ![]() Diving into World 1-1 is a minor revelation, with the primary colours, effortlessly clever level design, and silky smooth movement bringing an instant grin to your face that remains fixed for the entire game. It’s an elegant simplicity that is typical of the rest of the game. Controlling Mario couldn’t be easier: the only buttons involved are run (by default the portly plumber moves at a surprisingly slow speed), jump and crouch.
